COMPUTER AS 'TOOL' , 'TUTOR' , AND 'TUTEE'
In today's society, Computer is an important part of human's life and no more to be known as 'just' a hardware or device that assigned to carry out a set of arithmetic or logical operations only, but it can do more that we're now rely on this device most of the time as people always said 'information is at your fingertips'. This phrase is nothing but to convey that computer is capable in making our life easier and is bringing a change into this world . One of the functions of a computer besides allows you to search for information, it also. provides interface enabling a user to communicate with computer. Furthermore, computer is widely used among educators as their tool for teaching. They provide teaching materials using computer not for their own students but meant to be shared and accessed among other students all around the globe.
Computer as a Tool refers to the use of computer itself as a tool to assist educators or teachers to manage their teaching process inside or outside of the classroom.Some of the software that can be used are Word processing, graphical tools,Presentation software and database and electronic spreadsheet management program.In the other hand, Computer as a tutor means that computer is responsible to covey lesson to students as well as to provide learning activities like quiz that involve interactions with students.The advantage to use computer as a tutor is it's interactivity features that do not exist in printed materials.The use of computers as 'tutor' require students to respond actively and generate individualized learning.According to Newby et al . ( 2000 ) , computer applications as a teacher is often also referred to as Computer -based Instruction ,Computer -assisted Instruction or Computer -assisted Learning There are a number of software applications in the category of teaching is based on a computer that is :
(a) tutorials
(b) practiced repeatedly,
(c) simulation
(d) virtual reality
(e) game
(f) resolution.
Last but not least, Computer as a Tutee. In the context of the computer as a student , Taylor (1980 ) described the user ( teacher or student ) exchange roles with the computer.In this application,the computer no longer deliver information to users , but users ' teach ' the computer to perform a particular task.To achieve this application ,users must have the knowledge and skills of how to communicate with the computer in a language understood by the computer to enable it to produce assignments ( Newby et al ., 2000).These skills also requires logical thinking and problem solving skills .In conclusion, various methods can be used by teachers to integrate computers into teaching and learning .Teachers can choose whether to use a computer as a 'tool' , 'tutor' or 'tutee' as long as the method is able to achieve the expected learning objectives
